We headed out of town late Tuesday (4/28) afternoon for a mellow 10 miles up into the hills north of Lordsburg. We loved that place, but having it in our line of sight was growing old. There had been chatter at the hotel that morning of water sources being few and far between, but we managed to find this one only a few miles down the road. It had half of a dead lizard in it but otherwise was fine, cold even. I know...makes you thirsty looking at it, huh?
That night we cowboy camped beneath the stars again. We had all brought too much food with us for the two days of hiking we were planning on doing, so we had a big dinner. The next morning was Nightcrawler's birthday, so she got extra chocolate bars.
We leapfrogged a few others as we wandered through the hills that afternoon towards our first big ascent, Burro Peak. We met a lovely gal named Threshold, We also met Fozzy, Hojo, Pacer and a German couple whose names I've forgotten at the moment. Didn't take any pictures really...but we enjoyed a nice sunset at the top and night-hiked a bit to camp by the water source we had been aiming at.
The next morning, after collecting our delicious, buggy water, we began the uneventful slog towards Silver City: 6-ish miles of dirt road, followed by 12-ish miles along Hwy 90. A kind woman running support for her wife stopped by to say hi, let us pet her dogs and gave us cold Gatorades. Thanks Gretchen and Addi!
It was a long, hot walk, but we were rewarded with a lovely night spent at the RV Park here with nice showers and a green lawn to camp on. Silver City has a big bike race happening this weekend and so it's funny to get nods from bikers- they recognize the puffy jackets but they don't really know what to make of us otherwise. It's a cool town. Nightcrawler hasn't been feeling well but but as soon as we're up to it we'll push on to Doc Campbell's.
